Blogs vs. Wikis

Today's new and media has become much more personal and professional. Users are able to share news on the internet. Blogs and Wikis both allow for the communication of information by users. They also act as a platform for feedback. For blogs, this is done with comments on a blog post. As for wikis, users can edit the page directly. Blogs allow users to have more control over the information they share. The audience can not change the information but their opinions are still present through their comments. Wikis are more susceptible to internet predators because anyone can edit the page. This allows for a more direct way of one's voice to be heard. According to the article, " More on How to Build Your Own Wikipedia", a wiki allows for efficient team collaboration so that every member can contribute ( Locher 2008). Likewise, blogs can be used for Collaboration as well. Bloggers can build relationships with other bloggers and their audience. They can interact through comments and they can provide links to other blogs. This collaboration between bloggers will help build their audience base and also share new information with their audience.

Based on the article, " Stung by the Perfect Sting", blogs, wikis, and the internet allows for the freedom of speech but sometimes it is misused inappropriately for reasons such as defamation ( Dowd 2009). Today's networked world requires a lot of convergence. In this world, everything is linked together. A simple blog can reach thousands of comments and a large number of readers. This is how information is spread, if there is no convergence, information will not spread as easily and efficiently. Wikis hold a lot of information and also allows for the transfer of information. A new way to use wikis would be to use it as a trending news page. Users can add a news event that is currently happening while others edit the page and continue to add updates.

Research Paper Proposal

For my research paper, I would like to research on the differences between old media and new media. Throughout the paper, I plan to first introduce what old media and new media is. Then I will compare and contrast both medias. I will also research and explain how with time, new media can become old and time is the key factor in determining this. New forms of media are constantly introduced into the market, providing to us new forms of entertainment, creativity, and communication methods. New media will eventually become “old” and will be “replaced” with newer media. Lastly, I want to discuss about the future of old media and whether or not it will become more obsolete.
